Imagine getting to brew your very own homebrew recipe on a local brewery’s commercial system and your beer being served at locations around town! How cool would it be for your family, friends and fellow homebrewers to see your beer and your name on the beer list? Well, now you have the opportunity!

Central Oregon Beer Week and the Central Oregon Homebrewers Organization are teaming up to host the COBW Pro-Am Homebrew Competition, with winning beers brewed on professional systems to be served during COBW in May. So start brewing now!

RULES:

  • This competition is open to any homebrewer age 21 or older and is not limited to any particular category or style of beer, within the below guidelines. The beers will not be judged to a specific BJCP style and can be a creative expression of the brewer’s intent, however consideration must be made to timing (there will be at most about 6 weeks of time between brewing and serving) and to the capabilities of the commercial breweries to brew the winning beers.

    • As there is a limited amount of brewing and conditioning time, maximum alcohol by volume (ABV) must be 8.5% and no wood- or barrel-aging styles will be allowed.

    • Similarly, only ale styles will be accepted, no lagers.

    • No extreme or exotic ingredients can be used, particularly if they would be prohibitively expensive to the host brewery. This would apply to fruits, spices, vegetables, unusual malts, and so on. If you have a question, please ask us.

    • In general you can use whatever yeast variety you want, but be aware that a commercial brewery may be limited in what yeast it can use.

  • Within these guidelines, any reasonable style will be accepted.

  • All entries shall consist of three 12oz, crown-capped bottles only (no swing-tops). NOTE: Attach BJCP bottle labels with rubber bands only; DO NOT tape or glue labels to the bottle! Entry forms with recipes are mandatory and MUST include the full recipe of the beer (note that while this is not being judged to BJCP style guidelines, we will use the forms for convenience). Please clearly indicate “COBW Pro-Am” on the labels. You can print out an entry form here, and print out bottle ID forms here.

  • Brewers are limited to one entry only. There is NO entry fee.

  • All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).

  • This competition will be judged by a panel of judges from the Central Oregon Brewers Guild, COHO, and possibly the Central Oregon Beer Angels. There will be at least 4 to 5 winning beer selected, to be brewed by each of the participating commercial breweries; this final number may change depending on participation by the commercial breweries.

  • The breweries will select (according to their timing and capability) which of these winning beers they would like to brew.

  • The winning brewers will brew their beer on the selected breweries’ systems as scheduling allows, but most likely will be soon after the winners are announced. The winning beers will be served during Central Oregon Beer Week and possibly longer with the winners’ names and beers’ names listed on the beer menus.

  • The professional breweries reserve the right to make substitutions to the winners’ ingredients, based on what is readily available to the brewery.

DATES:

  • Beers must be dropped off at The Brew Shop by 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Please clearly indicate “COBW Pro-Am” on the labels.

  • Judging will be held the second week of April, by a judge panel composed of Central Oregon Brewers Guild board members, COHO judges, and possibly Central Oregon Beer Angels.

  • Winning beers will be brewed during the month of April, schedule permitting.

  • COBW event be taking place during Beer Week in May 2019 (date and time depending on final COBW schedule).
